Weekly Wisdom/Thoughts on Truth

December 1, 2016

"And you will have confidence because there is hope."
(Job 11:18)

"Everything that is done in the world is done by hope."
(Martin Luther)

In 1897, with hope in her heart, a little girl wrote to the editor of The New York Sun to find out if there really was a Santa Claus. Here, in part, is the answer that she received:

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! ... There would be no childlike faith then ... The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.... Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see."

How true this is! For isn't Santa Claus a symbol of God's love in action and isn't Christmas a wonderful opportunity for that love to be expressed by all?

With the same faith as Virginia, let each of us renew his or her faith in God's love and remember that there is a Santa Claus! Unity/The Promise of Christmas
